The Green Agriculture Youth Organization Zambia (GAYO) has successfully completed a six-day training on managing climate resilience for 50 youths in Kanakatampa, Chongwe district, Zambia. The training was designed and supported by the German
Sparkassenstiftung, a foundation that promotes financial inclusion and economic development.
The training was conducted by Zfawib trainers Ms .Janet and Ms. Inonge, who imparted a lot of knowledge and skills on how to cope with the impacts of climate change . The trainers also taught the learners to set goals to improve the quality of the farm , by investing in increased farm values, raising your farm , resilience towards climate change and by impacting the environment positively.
The training was the first of its kind to be conducted in Zambia, and it was hands-on and interactive.
The participants learnt about opportunities to explore innovative approaches to work and tools for adapting a farm to a changing climate, they also learnt about consequences climate change might have on small businesses and the training provided insights into the management of risks associated with it.They also learned how to assess the risks and opportunities of different livelihood options in relation to the changing climate.
They were taught how to make informed decisions on where to invest their money during the rainy seasons and how to manage the climate without damaging the environment.
The youths who attended the training gave positive feedback and expressed their gratitude to GAYO and its partners. They said that the training was very useful and relevant to their lives and aspirations. They also said that the training empowered them to become more active and effective in the climate movement and policy discussions. They also said that as farmers they will be able to manage production output and investments whilst dealing with unexpected events .They pledged to share their learnings with their peers and communities and to apply them in their own projects and initiatives.
GAYO is a youth-led organization that works to promote green agriculture and environmental sustainability in Zambia. Green agriculture is an approach that takes into consideration the well-being of local communities and the environment by applying ecological principles and practices to farming. GAYO provides technical trainings and education to farmers on various topics such as soil health, water management, crop diversification, pest control, organic farming, and climate-smart agriculture. GAYO also introduces farmers to appropriate technologies that can enhance their productivity and resilience, such as solar irrigation, biogas, fire blocks and mobile applications. By doing so, GAYO aims to improve the livelihoods of rural communities and contribute to the global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
